Postcard Linen Marysville High School Marysville CA 1930s-40s Kropp Unused

Marysville, California, USA1940LinenExcellent

Brick towers and red-tiled roofs rise proudly above manicured grounds in this crisp linen-era portrait of Marysville High School — the California Republic Bear Flag and Stars and Stripes flying together against a cobalt sky that only Kropp's natural color process could conjure. Marysville, seat of Yuba County in the northern Sacramento Valley, wears its Gold Rush heritage proudly: founded at the confluence of the Feather and Yuba rivers, it was once among California's most important cities, a supply hub for miners and a waypoint on routes to the northern mines. The high school building pictured represents the civic pride and architectural ambition of a community that had weathered floods, fires, and the shifting fortunes of California's agricultural economy. The back text notes Yuba County's 685 square miles and its deep roots in Sutter's land holdings, Indian occupation, Spanish colonization, and mining — a compressed California history lesson in postcard form.
