Postcard Sutter County Court House Yuba City CA Linen c1940s #704

Yuba City, California, USA1945LinenGood

A proud Greek Revival courthouse rises above a canopy of swaying palms in this vivid linen-era view of Yuba City, California — a building that had already burned to the ground twice before the camera ever pointed its way. Originally erected in 1858, the Sutter County Court House was destroyed by fire in 1871, rebuilt in 1872, destroyed again in 1899, and then reconstructed a third time with painstaking fidelity to the original architecture; the structure pictured here is that resilient third incarnation, festooned with colorful flower beds and flanked by mature palms that give it an almost Mediterranean warmth. The linen surface pops with the saturated blues and creams typical of the Curt Teich era, card number 704 in the publisher's sequence.
