Stratford-on-Avon Church Chancel Interior Postcard c1905 Harvey Barton Bristol

Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, United Kingdom1910Pre-linenGood

Shafts of light filter through towering lancet windows of medieval stained glass as the ornate high altar of Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon, commands the centre of this atmospheric early photographic postcard — the same chancel where William Shakespeare was baptised and buried, his monument visible along the north wall, making every stone in this image charged with literary pilgrimage. The halftone photograph captures the full Gothic grandeur of the chancel with unusual clarity for the era: the elaborate reredos, iron altar rail, candlesticks, carved choir stalls, and the riot of Victorian restoration glass in the great east window all rendered in cool silvery grey. Published by Harvey Barton & Son, Ltd., Bristol — one of the most prolific early postcard publishers serving the English tourist trade — and printed on a card that specifies "A Half-Penny Stamp to be Placed Here," placing it firmly in the pre-1918 era when the inland postcard rate was a halfpenny. The back is unused and entirely clean. Shakespeare pilgrimage postcards from Harvey Barton enjoy steady collector demand, and this chancel view is one of the most iconic of the series.
