Postcard Fifteenth Century London St Paul's Churchyard A.C. Payne Art c1904

London, England1905Pre-linenExcellent

Richly atmospheric and historically evocative, this early-1900s colour-printed art card transports the viewer to the medieval precinct of old St Paul's Cathedral — the towering Gothic spire of the pre-Fire building soaring above a candlelit religious procession, while armoured knights on horseback, clergy in vestments, and townswomen in tall hennin headdresses crowd the churchyard in a scene the artist has rendered with genuine painterly warmth. Published by S. Hildesheimer & Co. of London and Manchester and chromolithographed in Bavaria to the high standard for which German printers of the era were renowned, the card belongs to the "Fifteenth Century London" series — a set designed to appeal to the Edwardian public's keen appetite for romanticised history. The golden domed reliquary carried in procession, the billowing incense smoke catching shafts of light, and the lively crowd of onlookers give the composition a theatrical energy that makes it a standout piece for collectors of artist-signed topographical or historical genre cards. Never posted; reverse is clean with divided-back format and Bavarian printing credit (Series No. 5324).
