A barrel-vaulted medieval dormitory stretches the full length of the frame, its magnificent curved timber roof — ancient oak rafters arching overhead like the hull of an upturned ship — sheltering what had by the Edwardian era become a remarkable private library, with tall bookcases lining one long wall and Persian rugs covering the original stone floor beneath Georgian and Victorian furniture. This is the great Dormitory of Beeleigh Abbey, the thirteenth-century sleeping quarters of the White Canons, near Maldon in Essex, preserved virtually intact through five centuries of post-Dissolution private ownership. The room later passed to the Foyle family of Charing Cross Road bookselling fame, who filled it with one of the finest private libraries in England. This unused Edwardian card — the third in a matched set with the Chapter House and Refectory views — offers a rare pre-Foyle glimpse of the space when its extraordinary architectural character was already apparent but its bibliographic destiny not yet fixed.
