Postcard 1920s Cairo Egypt Evening Pyramids Camels Lehnert Landrock 2046

Cairo, Egypt1925Pre-linenExcellent

Two camel riders move in silhouette along the edge of a mirror-still Nile backwater as the Pyramids of Giza glow pink and violet in a blazing Egyptian sunset — one of the most romantic and enduring images of North Africa, rendered here in Lehnert & Landrock's masterful hand-coloring, where deep purples and burning oranges transform a photograph into something approaching a painted canvas. This card, number 2046 in Lehnert & Landrock's celebrated Egypt series, is a classic of the genre: the twilight palette, the doubled pyramids reflected in the water, the tiny human figures giving scale to the ancient monuments. Rudolf Lehnert's photographs, often taken at dawn or dusk to capture this quality of light, were among the most technically ambitious travel photographs of the early 20th century, and Landrock's Cairo printing studio elevated them further with careful hand-applied color tints that have aged remarkably well on unused examples like this one.
