Postcard 1918 S. Benedetto Po Italy Pontoon Bridge Ponte in Chiatte WWI Era

San Benedetto Po, Mantova, Italy1918Pre-linenFair-Good

Stretching across the broad, flat Po River near the ancient Benedictine abbey town of San Benedetto Po in the Mantua province of Lombardy, this evocative early Italian card shows the "Ponte in Chiatte" — a pontoon bridge of flat-bottomed barges lashed together to carry foot and cart traffic across one of Europe's great rivers, with moored rowboats in the foreground and a toll house or bridge keeper's cabin midspan. San Benedetto Po sits in the heart of the Po Valley, and pontoon bridges were a vital part of river crossing infrastructure here well into the 20th century; the WWI-era press censor stamp on the back ("Ufficio Rev. Stampa — Milano, 22-5-1918 N. 4203") confirms this card was reviewed and authorized for publication or sale during Italy's wartime censorship regime, adding a layer of historical significance to what might otherwise seem a quiet rural scene. The publisher, Pelloni Claudio of Mantova, was a local regional publisher active in the First World War period.
