Postcard 1920s Tennoji Five Storied Pagoda Tower Osaka Japan UPU Chrome

Osaka, Japan1925Pre-linenFair-Good

Blazing vermilion and deep forest-green tiers rise against a crisp blue Osaka sky — Tennoji's ancient five-story pagoda, rebuilt and resplendent, towers over the sweeping temple rooflines in this vivid hand-tinted Japanese souvenir card that almost certainly passed through Western hands during Japan's great interwar tourism boom. Shitennoji temple, founded in 593 CE by Prince Shotoku, is among the oldest Buddhist complexes in Japan; the pagoda visible here is the reinforced-concrete reconstruction completed in 1959 but this colorized card — printed "Made in Japan" on its Union Postale Universelle back — dates to an earlier iteration, likely the 1920s–early 1930s, when Osaka aggressively marketed its heritage sites to foreign visitors arriving by ocean liner. The dramatic color and period street-level context make this a striking piece of prewar Japanese tourism ephemera.
