Postcard 1920s Osaka City Hall Office Building Japan UPU Hand-Tinted

Osaka, Japan1925Pre-linenFair

Streetcars clatter past and early automobiles crowd the broad plaza fronting a monumental Beaux-Arts city hall — this hand-tinted Osaka souvenir card captures the municipal pride of a city that was, in the 1920s, Japan's commercial capital and second-largest metropolis, a bustling port where East met West in stone and steel. The Osaka City Hall (大阪市役所) shown here is the Second City Hall, completed in 1921 and demolished in 1986; its confident European neo-classical facade, complete with central clock tower and red-domed annex, embodied the Meiji-to-Taisho ambition to project modernity to the world. Trams, rickshaws, and motor cars share the frame in a rare slice of interwar urban Japan preserved in vivid applied color, making this a compelling document for students of Japanese urban history and architecture.
