Against a bruised violet night sky streaked with gathering storm clouds, two fissure vents on the northern Hekla ridge blaze simultaneously — rivers of lava course downhill in luminous orange channels while bursts of incandescent spatter arc upward in perfect parabolas, the whole scene bathed in a hellish red-orange light that turns the surrounding basalt field into a smouldering canvas. Published by the well-known Reykjavík cartographer Guðmundur Hannesson and printed by the Litbrá offset press, this "Hekla on Fire" card is among the most visually striking single-image souvenir cards to emerge from Iceland's landmark 1970 eruption, which began on 5 May and drew scientists, journalists, and curious travellers to the volcano's flanks for weeks.
