Postcard RPPC 1959 Pohutu Geyser Whakarewarewa Rotorua NZ Downer Photo

Whakarewarewa, Rotorua, New Zealand1959RPPCGood

A lone figure stands in dark silhouette before the thundering column of the Pohutu Geyser at Whakarewarewa, Rotorua — one of the world's most powerful active geysers, here erupting in full fury in a photograph that captures both the sublime scale of New Zealand's geothermal landscape and the quiet courage of whoever stood that close for the shot. Steam and superheated water rocket skyward in a dense white column that dwarfs the human figure below, dwarfing the silicate terraces and rocky platform on which they stand. The card was mailed from Auckland on 2 January 1959 to an address in Vienna, Austria — sent by a writer (first name initial only: likely a traveller named with initial corresponding to the cursive on the message side) who describes their New Zealand experiences with evident enthusiasm, the message penned on New Year's Day 1959. Photographer Downer of Rotorua (Downer Dist. Photo) was a key commercial photographer for the NZ tourism industry.
