Postcard 1905 Viamala 2. Brücke Gorge Thusis Switzerland Guler Publisher

Viamala Gorge, Thusis, Graubünden, Switzerland1905Pre-linenGood

The ancient gorge of the Viamala near Thusis, Switzerland plunges into near-darkness in this vertiginous early-twentieth-century photograph — sheer limestone walls barely wider than a rushing torrent squeeze together for nearly 200 metres, while a graceful stone arch bridge (the "2. Brücke," or second bridge) spans the void high above, framed by a sliver of pale sky and overhanging trees. The Viamala Gorge on the old Via Mala road through the Alps was already a celebrated tourist attraction by the time this card was published by J. Guler of Thusis, its drama and gothic atmosphere attracting Romantic-era travellers since the 18th century. An oval blue stamp on the reverse reads "Viamala-Gallerie bei Thusis," confirming this card was sold on-site at the gorge's visitor gallery — a charming piece of commercial tourism ephemera from the heyday of Swiss Alpine postcard collecting.
