Postcard 1940s Basel Switzerland Rhine River Münster Cathedral RPPC Censored

Basel, Switzerland1944RPPCGood

A wartime missive from neutral Switzerland reaches Vienna through the fog of occupation — this atmospheric real-photo postcard captures Basel's iconic Münster Cathedral rising dramatically above the Rhine, its distinctive diamond-patterned roof tiles and twin Gothic spires reflected in the swiftly moving river below, small boats tied at the near bank and a riverside pavilion hugging the water's edge. Sent from Geneva in late 1944 (postmarked 25.IV., wartime year), a writer signing as "Dein Clara" addresses young Birgit with warm, rushed greetings from Basel, noting she cannot stay longer in this beautiful spot, that she misses Vienna, and sending all good things. The card bears a highly collectible Österreichische Zensurstelle (Austrian Censorship Office) circular violet stamp — a haunting reminder that even family postcards were screened under Nazi occupation of Austria. Two Swiss Helvetia 10-centime green train/tunnel stamps (Michel 291) frank the card, both with clear Geneva cancels.
