Massive solid wooden wheels — each taller than the driver standing beside them — dominate the foreground of this striking linen card, the sheer bulk of a traditional Mexican ox-cart rendered with a photographer's eye for geometry and texture as two dark oxen lean into their yoke beneath a brilliant Mexican sun. Known as the carreta de bueyes, this ox-drawn cart with its distinctive solid disc wheels of carved wood was a fixture of rural Mexican transport for centuries, little changed from pre-colonial antecedents, and photographer Luis Márquez has framed the scene with the same respectful ethnographic gaze he brought to all his documentation of Mexican country life.
