Taken from a low riverside vantage point, this striking real-photo-style halftone card captures the Charles Bridge in full summer leaf, its stone arches reflected in the Vltava while a long procession of pedestrians crosses beneath the baroque statues — and above it all, the mighty Hradčany castle complex with St. Vitus Cathedral commands the hilltop skyline. The card was mailed on 12 December 1940, during the Nazi occupation of Bohemia and Moravia, from Prague to a Franz and his wife in Vienna VI — a poignant wartime correspondence crossing occupied territories. The reverse carries a 60-heller Bohmen und Mahren (Bohemia and Moravia Protectorate) stamp, the definitive Cathedral issue used throughout the occupation. The message, written in German cursive, is signed with warm regards and dated 11.12.40, one day before the postmark.
