Elegantly dressed figures in Ottoman-influenced dress rest in the foreground while a small group of travelers passes beneath the arch's coffered vault, evoking the layered civilizations that have washed over Istria's Roman bones. The arch, erected in honor of the Sergii family around 29–27 BCE, was still half-buried in medieval rubble when the original engraving was made; James Joyce would later live in Pula and write about its monuments. Publisher F. W. Schrinner of Pola issued this postcard reproduction in 1909, when the city was the principal naval base of Austria-Hungary, lending it a rare dual identity as both antiquarian document and late-Habsburg ephemera.
