Someone — almost certainly a soldier or young man named Jim, writing to a family named Mooney in Richmond, Virginia in the hot summer of 1944 — couldn't resist picking up a pen and adding his own editorial to this cheerful linen view of Victoria Park's elm-shaded Drive in London, Ontario: a grinning stick figure in a wide-brimmed hat perches on a bollard beside a "No Parking" sign, with the caption "I was here the other night." The spontaneous folk-art drawing transforms a generic park scene into a tiny time capsule of wartime North America — someone cold, homesick ("I hope you aren't as cold down there as I am"), and homesick enough to doodle. Jim's crowded handwriting covers nearly every inch of the reverse, mentioning money orders, plans to return home around the 27th of September, and sending greetings to "all."
