Postcard Machu Picchu Peru Citadel Huaynapicchu 1973 Used Mailed Rochester NY

Machu Picchu, Cusco Region, Peru1973ChromeGood

Red Andean wildflowers frame the terraced stone citadel of Machu Picchu as Huayna Picchu's dramatic peak looms behind in perpetual cloud — and on the back, a traveller named George writes breathlessly to friends in Rochester, New York, that they were "on a plane now for this famous place" after a 5 a.m. wake-up call and days so packed they'd lost track of time. Mailed in 1973 with a Peruvian sello postal meter impression, this chrome card — produced by Lima Tours and photographed by Corbacho — captures the Inca citadel at the height of its rediscovery as a global tourist destination, a decade after regular tourist infrastructure was established. The handwritten message, addressed to a Dr. and his wife at 250 Dartmouth St., Rochester, NY 14607, speaks of boat and bus travel through rain, good food, fine "planes" (likely plans or films), and the anticipation of two days at what George calls "our coldest place." It is a vivid window into 1970s adventure travel to South America before the internet age compressed the world.
