Postcard Chrome Harbour Mallaig Scotland Fishing Boats 1960s INS176

Mallaig, Highland, Scotland1965ChromeGood

A fleet of weathered wooden fishing boats — including the distinctive blue-hulled INS176 registered out of Inverness — crowds the busy quayside at Mallaig, the remote Highland fishing port and ferry terminal at the end of the Road to the Isles. This vivid chrome-era colour card captures a lost world of working Scottish fisheries: the smell of diesel and salt practically rises from the image, with lobster creels stacked on the pier, a red fuel tanker on the quay, and a small rowing dinghy in the foreground being attended by two figures in bright jackets. On the reverse, Cath and Bill noted their stay here from July 29th to August 1st — a holiday memory jotted in careful cursive, the postcard kept rather than sent. Mallaig in this period was at the height of its herring and white-fish industry before North Sea stock collapses reshaped the fleet; the registration INS176 offers a potential vessel-history research thread for maritime enthusiasts.
