Postcard RPPC Broadway Village Street Worcestershire Cotswolds c1920

Broadway, Worcestershire, England1922RPPCGood

A lone motor car rounds the gentle bend of Broadway's wide High Street in this exquisitely composed sepia real-photo postcard — honey-coloured Cotswold limestone cottages and garden walls glowing even in monochrome, mature trees arching overhead in full summer leaf. Broadway in Worcestershire (now Worcestershire after boundary changes; it sits on the Worcestershire–Gloucestershire border) was already famous by the Edwardian and inter-war period as the "Jewel of the Cotswolds," a magnet for Arts and Crafts movement luminaries including William Morris devotees and American expatriate painters. The early automobile visible mid-frame helps date the card to the early 1920s, when motor tourism was beginning to open the village to a wider public. Published by local bookseller and stationer W. H. Green of Broadway, whose cards are prized by Cotswold topographic collectors, this unused example presents a tranquil scene of village England at its most picturesque.
