Two rare early real-photo postcards open the door into Milton's Cottage at Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire — the only surviving home of John Milton, the blind poet who completed Paradise Lost here in 1665 while fleeing the Great Plague. The upper card shows the study with its heavy carved oak writing table, visitors' books open on its surface, and a vast fireplace hung with a decorative panel, while the walls bristle with framed prints and portraits. The lower card reveals an adjoining room lined floor-to-ceiling with engravings, medallion portraits, and Milton memorabilia — a Victorian museum-within-a-cottage atmosphere that breathes literary pilgrimage. Both cards were photographed by Coles of Watford, a regional photographer who produced several series for heritage sites across Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in the Edwardian period. Unused and unpublished — a matched pair of exceptional literary and historic interest.
