Behind a sweeping four-poster canopied bed hung with pale curtains lies one of England's most evocative Tudor interiors — Queen Margaret of Anjou's Room at Packwood House, Warwickshire, its walls alive with painted woodland murals that seem to press the forest right into the bedchamber. The room is steeped in legend: Margaret of Anjou, the fierce Lancastrian queen who fought to hold the crown for her husband Henry VI during the Wars of the Roses, is said to have sheltered here in the 15th century. The photograph captures the room's atmospheric details with precision — the Chippendale-style chairs, the carved oak chest of drawers, the generous stone fireplace with andirons still laid for a fire, and wide-planked floorboards worn smooth by centuries of footfall. Packwood House was gifted to the National Trust in 1941 by Graham Baron Ash, who spent decades restoring and furnishing it, making this interior photograph a rare pre-Trust record of the room's mid-century presentation.
