RPPC Postcard 1930s Mars Hill Lynmouth Devon England Harbour Boats Village

Lynmouth, Devon, England1930RPPCExcellent

Stone walls draped in moss rise from a tidal harbour where two clinker-built rowing boats rest on the sand — this evocative real-photograph postcard captures Mars Hill, Lynmouth, at a moment of perfect coastal stillness, probably in the late 1920s or early 1930s. The dense wooded hillside of Exmoor crowds down behind the slate-roofed fishermen's cottages, and high on the slope a white villa peers through the canopy — a reminder that wealthy Victorians were already colonising these cliffs long before the village became famous. Lynmouth sits at the foot of the Valley of Rocks where the East and West Lyn rivers meet the Bristol Channel; the harbour wall visible here was catastrophically destroyed in the flood of August 1952, making pre-flood imagery of the village especially sought after by collectors and local historians alike. This unused example is crisp and square-cornered, printed on silver-gelatin paper stock typical of British manufacturers of the inter-war period.
