RPPC Postcard 1930s Lynton & Lynmouth Devon England Panoramic Harbour Coastal

Lynton & Lynmouth, Devon, England1930RPPCExcellent

From a high vantage on the cliffs above Lynton, a sweeping panorama unfolds across the twin villages and their shared shoreline — the grand Victorian hotels and terraces of Lynton crown the hilltop at left, the wooded East Lyn gorge plunges to Lynmouth below, and the tiny harbour with its stone pier and moored sailing vessels punctuates the Bristol Channel foreshore to the right in this stunning real-photograph postcard from the inter-war era. The Rhenish Tower — a curious mid-Victorian folly erected as a saltwater reservoir — is just visible at the harbour mouth, and the cliff railway connecting the two settlements can be inferred by the scar on the hillside. Like its companion card in this batch (Mars Hill, PC-04582), this view predates the catastrophic flood of 15 August 1952, which destroyed the harbour and much of Lynmouth's waterfront, giving all pre-disaster photographic records of the village enduring historical significance. The card is unused, with the same "British Manufacture / This is a Real Photograph" reverse, and is in excellent, square-cornered condition.
