Postcard 1950s Ronchamp Chapel Notre-Dame du Haut Le Corbusier France CIM

Ronchamp, Haute-Saône, France1957ChromeExcellent

Rising dramatically from its hilltop in the Haute-Saône, the Chapel of Notre-Dame du Haut at Ronchamp stands as one of the twentieth century's most radical acts of architectural faith — Le Corbusier's sweeping concrete roof curves like a ship's hull over thick white walls pierced with irregularly placed colored-glass windows, flanked by massive cylindrical towers. This early postcard photograph, published by CIM and copyrighted through S.P.A.D.E.M. Paris, captures the south façade in striking black-and-white, a tiny visitor visible at the base of the north tower offering a humbling sense of scale. Completed in 1955 and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ronchamp transformed sacred architecture permanently; this card dates from shortly after the chapel's consecration, making it an early-issue document of one of modernism's most celebrated buildings.
