Postcard 1940s Colorado Southern Narrow Gauge Train No 71 Denver Central City

Denver / Central City, Colorado, USA1942LinenGood

Engine No. 71 of the Colorado & Southern Railway fills the frame with iron authority — smokestack gleaming, bell polished, the number boldly stenciled on her nose — as she hauls a string of cars through the rugged mountain cuts between Denver and Central City, Colorado. This striking black-and-white card commemorates the Famous "71," a narrow-gauge locomotive that worked this storied mining-country route until the line was finally abandoned in 1941, its tracks pulled up as scrap metal for the war effort. Published by Artvue Post Card Co. of 235 Fifth Avenue, New York, this card was produced after the line's closure as a memorial to a beloved piece of Rocky Mountain railroad history, making it both a transportation document and an early piece of railroad nostalgia ephemera.
