Ivy clings to the soaring Gothic gable of the ruined chapter church at Abbaye de Beauport, its lancet windows open to the Breton sky, the stone walls slowly surrendering to vegetation in a scene of melancholy splendour that would have delighted any Romantic traveller passing through Paimpol in the early 1900s. The Premonstratensian abbey, founded in 1202 by Alain de Goëllo, was sold off during the French Revolution and left to decay; by the time this crisp phototype was made for publisher A. Bruel of Angers it had become one of Brittany's most-visited Gothic ruins. The card is numbered 54 in A. Bruel's Côtes-du-Nord series and printed in the high-quality collotype (phototype) process that yields rich tonal gradation without halftone dots — a hallmark of quality French publishing around 1900–1910. Unused and clean, it retains a sharp image with excellent shadow detail in the stonework.
