Elaborate stucco figures, painted heraldic panels, and Gothic revival ornamentation cascade across every inch of the celebrated Haus zum Pfistern on Lucerne's Hirschenplatz, photographed here in a luminous black-and-white gelatin print that captures the building's theatrical façade with almost architectural precision — you can make out the mounted knight relief, the carved column arcade at street level, and the step-gabled roofline pierced by a tiny flagpole. The Haus zum Pfistern (Bakers' Guild house), dating in its painted form to the late 16th century and repeatedly restored, remains one of Switzerland's finest examples of a guild house with historicist painted decoration.
