Postcard 1900 Paris La Bourse Stock Exchange France B.F. Undivided Back UDB

Paris, France1900Pre-linenGood

Dozens of top-hatted brokers and well-dressed Parisians swarm the grand colonnaded steps of La Bourse — Paris's neoclassical stock exchange — in this remarkable crowd-filled street scene from the turn of the twentieth century, when fortunes were made and lost in the shadow of those towering Corinthian columns. A horse-drawn omnibus bound for Montparnasse and the Gare du Nord idles at the curb, and a Wallace drinking fountain anchors the right foreground, giving the image an almost cinematic depth. Published by B.F. Paris — a well-known French publisher whose cards are collected worldwide — this undivided-back card would have been a prized souvenir for travelers like a young Émile or Claire returning from the Paris Exposition era. The Palais Brongniart, designed by Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart and completed in 1826, dominates with imperial authority.
