Postcard 1920s St-Quay Portrieux Brittany France Beach Scene Carte Postale

Saint-Quay-Portrieux, Côtes-du-Nord (Côtes-d'Armor), Brittany, France1925Pre-linenGood

Dozens of summer holidaymakers sprawl and lounge across the wide sandy strand at Saint-Quay-Portrieux on the Côtes-du-Nord coast of Brittany — striped canvas bathing tents pitched at jaunty angles, children in dark wool swimwear, women in wide hats reading on the sand, and the handsome seaside villas of the Belle Époque climbing the headland behind them. This real-photograph-style black-and-white card, numbered 51 in a local series and published by Edition Desprès (a hairdresser-turned-local-publisher, as the spine text notes — coiffeur), captures the interwar French beach holiday at its most democratic and charming. Saint-Quay-Portrieux had been a fashionable resort since the late nineteenth century, its sheltered bay and mild climate drawing Parisian families seeking sea air. The image's documentary clarity makes it a fine social-history artifact, showing bathing fashion, tent styles, and the mixed-class leisure culture of 1920s coastal France.
