Swedish-born artist Gunnar Widforss — the painter the National Park Service called "the Painter of the National Parks" — captured this vertiginous afternoon panorama from the roof of the Desert View Watchtower, and Fred Harvey translated it to linen with a palette of molten golds, deep purples, and electric blue shadows that no photograph of the era could rival. The Colorado River is invisible in the haze of distance; instead the eye travels across hundreds of square miles of domes and towers whose names, as the card's evocative reverse text notes, read "like a roll call of the Gods — Rama, Vishnu, Wotan, Angels Gate, Zoroaster, Osiris, Isis, Horus, Shiva, Havasupai and The Great Thumb." Widforss died in 1934, making his Grand Canyon paintings among the most treasured images in the park's visual history, and this card — unused and vivid — preserves one of his most panoramic compositions.
