Postcard Chrome Basilica S. Maria degli Angeli Fresco Ilario da Viterbo Italy

Assisi, Umbria, Italy1965ChromeExcellent

Glowing with the amber warmth of medieval gold-ground painting, the great polyptych fresco by Fra Ilario da Viterbo fills the apse wall of the Basilica Patriarcale di Santa Maria degli Angeli — the monumental church built by Pope Pius IV in 1569 encasing the original Porziuncola chapel where St. Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscan Order. The composition cascades from a crowned Christ in glory at the apex, through the Coronation of the Virgin attended by ranks of angels and saints, down to a luminous Annunciation at center, with narrative scenes of Marian and Franciscan life filling the flanking panels. Altar candles and votive offerings crowd the foreground, a reminder that this remains a living pilgrimage site in Assisi, Umbria. Reproduced from a Kodak Ektachrome transparency by Fotorapi daColor of Terni, the chrome card captures the fresco's jewel-like palette with unusual fidelity for the era.
