Sumptuously embossed and printed in Germany at the peak of the Edwardian postcard craze, this "Congratulations" card presents a rosy-cheeked girl in a salmon-pink dress standing behind a wicker basket absolutely overflowing with blue forget-me-nots — the flowers spilling onto the grass in a riot of cerulean and sky, the whole scene framed by a deeply pressed border of hearts and geometric motifs that you can feel with a fingertip. The chromolithograph coloring is exceptionally vivid for its age, with rich greens, deep blues, and the girl's warm complexion all retaining their original brilliance. Mailed in June 1903 from Berlinville (likely Berlinville, Pennsylvania) to Lillie — addressed simply "City" suggesting local hand delivery — with a 1-cent green Franklin stamp. The back is itself a work of art: the embossing carries through to create a ghost image of the girl and basket in blind relief on the ivory reverse, with "Printed in Germany" at lower left, confirming its origins in the great chromolithography workshops of Saxony or Bavaria.
