A lone boatwoman drifts among white ducks on an impossibly turquoise Alpine lake, while behind her a grand five-storey hotel — flying the Italian tricolour — nestles at the foot of the sheer blue-grey Dolomite massif in this stunning chromolithograph by artist H. Treiber. The scene almost certainly depicts the Hotel Misurina or a comparable grand hotel at Lago di Misurina in the Ampezzo Dolomites, a fashionable destination for wealthy tourists in the Edwardian era when this region was still part of the Austro-Hungarian Tyrol. The publisher, S. Hildesheimer & Co. Ltd of London & Manchester (No. 1919), printed the card in Saxony — a hallmark of the finest pre-WWI chromolithographic quality. The undivided back with the note "This part may be used for correspondence for inland use only" places production between approximately 1900 and 1902. A detail image reveals Treiber's fine brushwork in the foreground figures and ducks. Unused and unposted; colours are exceptional.
