Postcard 1905 Paignton Devon England Bird's Eye View Hartmann Chrome Era

Paignton, Devon, England1905Pre-linenGood

A sweeping bird's-eye panorama of Paignton, Devon, unfolds across this richly hand-tinted Edwardian card — red-brick terraces and the distinctive square tower of St John the Baptist Church rise above wooded slopes in the foreground, while Torbay's glittering waters and the headland of Hope's Nose dissolve into a pale horizon; the card captures Paignton at the height of its Edwardian transformation from quiet fishing village into fashionable English Riviera resort, a period when the Great Western Railway was delivering holidaymakers in their thousands to this stretch of South Devon coast. Published in the Hartmann series — a German firm that produced premium-quality tinted cards for the British market before the First World War disrupted the trade — this unused example retains its clean, bright colours. The number 2749 on the face is the publisher's series reference, consistent with Hartmann's early-1900s output.
