Postcard 1904 National Costumes of Wales Two Women Baskets Star Series G.D.&D

Wales, United Kingdom1904Pre-linenGood

Two women face each other in a carefully staged outdoor tableau that brings the iconic Welsh national costume to vivid life — the figure on the right wears the tall stovepipe hat that became the defining symbol of Welsh female identity in the Victorian imagination, her red-and-yellow tartan skirt brilliant against the garden backdrop, while her companion holds a wicker basket brimming with what appear to be handkerchiefs or linen goods; both women carry baskets, evoking the image of the Welsh market woman that had been romanticised in prints and postcards since the mid-nineteenth century. The card was issued in the "Star Series" by G.D. & D. (Gale & Polden / or Gottschalk, Dreyfus & Davis — most likely Gottschalk, Dreyfus & Davis of London), printed in Bavaria, and the back specifies "Communication Here. Inland Only," dating it to the undivided-inland-back era, c.1902–1905. The "Copyright" notice on the front suggests a commercial photographic studio origin. These costume cards were enormously popular as tourist souvenirs from Welsh resorts and were collected in albums throughout the Edwardian era.
