Postcard 1962 Arctic Eskimo Diorama Thousand Islands Ontario Canada Chrome Used

Hill Island, Thousand Islands, Ontario, Canada1962ChromeGood

A dazzling museum diorama springs to photographic life on this mid-century chrome card — life-size figures in white fur parkas stand on a rocky Arctic shoreline before a painted backdrop of cobalt-blue icebergs and snow-capped mountains, a skin kayak pulled up at the water's edge while a woman in a tent entrance and a child crouching over a workpiece anchor the foreground in domestic detail; the scene is a reproduction of the summer Eskimo (Inuit) diorama housed in the Arctic Exhibition at International Resort Facilities on Hill Island in the Thousand Islands, Ontario — an unlikely but evidently compelling attraction sandwiched between a duty-free shop and a Canadian gift store on the bridge route between Canada and New York State. The card was mailed in 1962, postmarked Ontario, with a 4-cent Queen Elizabeth II Canadian stamp, and carries a warm family message from Auntie Jean and Uncle Rees (or Reed) to Beth and her father Daniel in Livonia, New York: "We saw this exhibit yesterday 9-24. It was really very interesting. Sun is warm but wind is so cold."
