A sweeping aerial-perspective real-photo view of Southport's elegant Kings Gardens and Marine Lake catches this Lancashire resort in its interwar heyday — well-dressed promenaders strolling manicured beds of tulips, a pavilion kiosk busy with visitors, and the famous Marine Lake stretching toward the long pier and the Irish Sea beyond. "Dad" sent this card on a Friday to his daughter Joan back home in Ottsville, Pennsylvania, scrawling that "Southport is a really nice place. Clean, plenty of amusements of all kinds." The card was mailed from Southport in July 1937 (partially legible postmark), franked with a trio of King George VI Photogravure stamps — two ½d green and one 1d scarlet — published by Valentine & Sons of Dundee and London in their Photo-Type series, catalog number H.2584. The Kings Gardens, opened in 1913, remain a Grade II listed landscape today, but this card preserves them at their commercial zenith.
