Postcard 1910s RPPC Shakespeare Portrait Old Painting Stratford-on-Avon Ernest Daniels

Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, England1910RPPCExcellent

Gazing out from an elaborately carved period frame bearing the date 1616 — the year of his death — this striking real-photo postcard reproduces what is labeled simply "Shakespeare. From an Old Painting," published by Ernest Daniels of The Studio, 10 Bridge Street, Stratford-on-Avon, the very town of the Bard's birth and burial. The portrait, with its high forehead, trim beard, white collar, and dark doublet, corresponds closely to the so-called "Flower Portrait" or related early copies that circulated widely in Edwardian-era Shakespeareana. The ornate carved frame with heraldic shields and the prominent "1616" date tablet give this reproduction a dramatic, monument-like gravitas that made it a popular keepsake for the stream of literary pilgrims visiting Stratford in the early twentieth century. The card is unused, with a bilingual (English/French) "Carte Postale" back carrying an Art Nouveau-influenced "K" monogram stamp box — consistent with German or continental printing circa 1905–1915. A lovely piece of literary and photographic history.
