Photographed with crisp Edwardian precision, this real-photo postcard (RPPC) offers a dramatic straight-on view of the magnificent Baldachino — the great canopy altar of Westminster Cathedral in London — its eight columns of dark Norwegian granite soaring beneath a gilded mosaic arch, the sanctuary veil hanging in rich detail behind the high altar steps. Westminster Cathedral, the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales, was completed in 1903, making this card almost certainly among the earliest postcard documentation of its interior. Published by J. Beagles & Co., Ltd. of London E.C. — one of the most respected Edwardian real-photo postcard houses — and sold through S. B. Bolas & Co. of 68 Oxford Street W., this card carries catalog number 786.W and the distinctive oval "Beagles' Post Cards" back stamp. Unused and remarkably well-preserved, it is a superb example of early architectural RPPC work and a prime collectible for both Catholic memorabilia and London topography enthusiasts.
