Postcard Kronborg Castle Helsingor Denmark Chrome 1950 Sent to Rochester NY

Helsingør (Elsinore), Denmark1950ChromeFair-Good

Hamlet's castle rises in Renaissance splendour above the Øresund strait in this mid-century chrome view of Kronborg Slot at Helsingør, Denmark — the fortress that inspired Shakespeare's Elsinore and guards the narrow channel between Denmark and Sweden. The card's saturated colours render the copper-green rooftops and pale stone walls almost theatrical, while a wooden sailing vessel moored at the quay below adds a timeless maritime note. An American traveller — signing off warmly as "Dorothy" — wrote to friends at 293 Hamilton St., Rochester, NY, describing a whirlwind tour: "Just had a marvelous overnight and dinner and an interesting and delicious... a very beautiful day, dear..." The postcard was received June 16, 1950, according to a pencilled note on the reverse, and bears a Danish stamp portrait of King Frederick IX.
