Antique & Vintage Postcards

One of the most photographed valleys in all of Scandinavia unfolds in breathtaking depth in this real-photo postcard taken from the famous terrace of Stalheim Turisthotell — a vintage touring car visible at lower right giving scale to the vertiginous drop into the Nærøydalen gorge, whose river winds like a silver thread between snow-capped walls of ancient granite thousands of feet above. Photographer Normann — whose lens documented Norway's grandest landscapes for Carl Normanns Kunstforlag — captured this view in classic high-contrast black-and-white that emphasises the sheer drama of the valley, a route once travelled by Kaiser Wilhelm II and later immortalised by J.C. Dahl. The back of this card is heavily foxed and age-stained, with only faint pencil marks visible, and was never formally mailed — leaving the front image as the star attraction for collectors of Norwegian grand-scenery cards.
