Antique & Vintage Postcards

Dappled light filters through a vine-covered pergola in this evocative real-photo postcard of the recently excavated garden of the House of Loreius Tiburtinus at Pompeii — one of the most elaborately landscaped private homes uncovered in the ancient city, featuring a long euripus (ornamental water channel) flanked by small bronze animal sculptures still visible in the foreground. Rediscovered during Mussolini-era "nuovi scavi" (new excavations) of the 1910s–30s, this garden stunned archaeologists with its sophisticated axial design mimicking the great villa gardens of the Roman elite; the pergola columns and water features seen here were among the best-preserved in situ garden structures found at Pompeii. The card was published multilingually — Italian, English, French, and German captions — signaling it was produced for the robust interwar tourist trade that flocked to the newly opened sections of the site.
