Postcard Pompeii Il Foro Forum Mt Vesuvius Color Italy c1900 De Luca

Pompeii, Italy1899Pre-linenFair-Good

A lone figure in a dark suit stands at the center of Pompeii's vast Forum, dwarfed by colonnades stretching toward Mount Vesuvius — still darkly brooding on the horizon — in this hand-tinted early-twentieth-century postcard that captures the haunting grandeur of antiquity's most famous buried city. Published by De Luca e C. of Naples, this early undivided-back card features luminous ochre stonework and a turquoise sky achieved through skilled chromolithographic tinting, a technique that gave Edwardian-era Italian tourist cards their characteristic warmth. The Forum, the civic heart of ancient Pompeii, was one of the first areas systematically excavated beginning in the 18th century, and postcards of this view with Vesuvius visible were among the most popular souvenirs sold at the site. The reverse bears a handwritten Italian message dated October 1898 or 1899, making this a genuinely mailed Edwardian artifact with fine provenance.
