Fluted columns rise from a lush peristyle garden in this sharp black-and-white photographic postcard of Pompeii's Casa degli Amorini Dorati — the House of the Gilded Cupids — named for the exquisite gold-leaf Eros figures found on oscillae (hanging garden ornaments) in this very courtyard, visible here replete with restored plantings and protective iron railings installed by early 20th-century conservators. The house, believed to have belonged to Gnaeus Poppaeus Habitus, a relative of Nero's ill-fated empress Poppaea Sabina, was among the most artistically sophisticated private residences in Pompeii, and this postcard captures the peristyle garden at its atmospheric best — part ruin, part living garden, all Roman. Published by Vincenzo Trampetti of Naples, a specialist in Pompeii archaeological photography postcards active through the mid-twentieth century. The reverse is unused and blank save the publisher imprint.
