Antique & Vintage Postcards

Midcentury Montreal gleams in hand-tinted color on this linen-era postcard capturing Dominion Square (now Dorchester Square) and the grand CPR Windsor Station — a traveler who signed only a date scrawled "Passed here many times today & yesterday, June 21 & 22, 1960," a wonderfully offhand record of urban wandering through one of Canada's most elegant Victorian streetscapes. The image, card no. 43 in the Photogelatine Engraving Co. series, shows the Romanesque Revival bulk of Windsor Station rising behind a foreground of mature elms, with the New Carlton Hotel sign visible at left and Gothic church spires piercing the right edge of the frame — a composition that perfectly encapsulates Montreal at the cusp of its Expo 67 transformation. The Photogelatine Engraving Co. Ltd. of Toronto was one of Canada's premier postcard producers of the mid-20th century, and their linen cards are actively sought by Canadian topographic collectors.
