Postcard 1910s Tivoli Rome Villa d'Este Terrace Italy Art Print A. Srocchi

Tivoli, Rome, Italy1915Pre-linenFair

Tall Italian cypresses pierce a dove-gray sky above the balustraded terrace of Villa d'Este at Tivoli in this richly atmospheric chromolithograph postcard — a painterly image that seems less a photograph than an oil study, its warm ochres and deep greens evoking the melancholy grandeur that drew Liszt to compose his famous piano piece here in the 1870s. Published by A. Srocchi of Milan and Rome under catalog number 4414-12, this unused card presents the terrace pool, climbing roses, and distant Sabine Hills in a soft-focus artistic style characteristic of Italian fine-art postcard production in the early 20th century. Villa d'Este, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built for Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este in the 16th century and is famed for its elaborate Renaissance gardens and fountains. The deckled "fancy" border edges and single-language back layout are consistent with Italian pre-WWI or early interwar production; the "Imprimé en Italie / Produzione Italiana / Printed in Italy" trilingual stamp on the reverse indicates export orientation. The card is unused and bears no postmark or address.
