Antique & Vintage Postcards

Bernini's sweeping colonnade embraces St. Peter's Square in a breathtaking aerial-perspective color postcard mailed in May 1965 from the Vatican — carrying a rare Vatican City 100-lire Espresso (express mail) stamp that adds both philatelic and narrative richness to a card already brimming with human warmth: the sender, signing simply as "Mom," wrote to her child in New York City that she "can't describe the wonderful trip" and noted "native guides in each big city" and a "regular guide with us all the time," conjuring the golden age of postwar European group tourism when American travelers first flooded the continent in organized tours. The chrome-style color card, published by A.R.C.A., captures the Basilica's dome and Bernini's 1656 colonnade at their most panoramic, the Egyptian obelisk at center flanked by twin fountains — a view unchanged since the 17th century. Postmarked Città del Vaticano 10.V.1965, this is a complete, well-traveled artifact of mid-century transatlantic correspondence.
