Antique & Vintage Postcards

Looking down the broad Via dei Trionfi on a cloudy Roman afternoon, this evocative pre-linen photograph catches the Arch of Constantine framing the distant hulk of the Colosseum beyond a canopy of umbrella pines — vintage automobiles with running boards and rounded fenders navigate the boulevard while a lone motorcyclist holds the center lane, and women in long skirts dot the sidewalks, composing an accidental time capsule of Mussolini-era Rome in full Fascist urban renewal. The road itself, the Via dei Trionfi, was dramatically widened and cleared by Mussolini in 1933–34 as a monumental axis linking the Circus Maximus to the Colosseum for propaganda spectacles, making this card a historically charged document of that transformation. Published by Cecami of Rome in 1934 and photographed by Cesare Capello of Milan, this unused card carries fine tonal gradation in the gravure process typical of the period.
