Postcard 1907 Palermo Sicily Sicilian Cart Carretto Excelsior Palace Hotel

Palermo, Sicily, Italy1907Pre-linenFair-Good

Bathed in the warm tints of early hand-colorization, a magnificently decorated Sicilian carretto — the ornately painted horse-cart that is one of Sicily's most iconic folk-art traditions — stands at a harborside promenade in Palermo, Monte Pellegrino's craggy limestone profile rising across the shimmering bay behind it, white-sailed feluccas dotting the water. Three passengers ride the elaborately paneled cart, its wheels gilded in gold and scarlet, the horse plumed in festive orange feathers. The card was published by the Excelsior Palace Hotel, Palermo — a luxury establishment that offered such artistic souvenirs to its well-heeled guests — and was mailed in 1907 with an Italian 10c stamp to Miss Margaret G. W. at 54 Cayuga Street, Seneca Falls, New York, arriving with a Seneca Falls postmark dated March 28, 1907. A faint handwritten note on the front reads "This is a most charming place — we arrived this morning." An irreplaceable slice of Edwardian Grand Tour travel, Sicilian folk culture, and early colorized postcard artistry.
